I signed the contract to purchase my CanAm from the local Pontiac dealer a half
an hour after they closed on New Years Eve 1979. It was a one owner
trade-in. I am the second owner. I took delivery of the car on 1/4/80. I have
owned it for 24 years now. The first few years I owned the car, it was my daily
driver (only car I had), even in the harsh Wisconsin winters. I had the car
repainted in the mid eighties, but now the paint is starting to show its age.
My car has the firethorn red interior with a bench seat and column shift. It has
a 3.23 posi rear end, stock engine (although the stock cam has been advanced 4
degrees), an opened up scoop, rejetted carb, and true dual exhaust. The car also
has air conditioning, tilt wheel, and an am/fm stereo (currently removed in
favor of an aftermarket unit).
During the 1980's I used to bracket race my CanAm. It ran a best et of 14.80
seconds with the above combination. It was a very consistent car that won many
rounds and trophies. Last year for the very first time I put it in the Foster
Pontiac show in Milwaukee. Even though my car is not show quality, I had a good
time and finally got to meet Don of our group in person for the first time. One
of my photos has our cars together.
Future plans include building a more powerful engine for my car. I am hoping to
achieve between 400 and 425 horsepower. Long term plans would have to include
getting the bodywork redone and repainted.
